Working to crawl

Tristan crawled today!!!  Well, in his own silly way.  He's needed a wipie box this whole time for motivation, who knew right?  When we went grocery shopping, he got to sit in a Target cart and the seat was just the right size.   We also stopped by the Kid to Kid and found him a little table, and it's perfect!  He loves it, even attempted to pull himself, but didn't quite get it, so we had to help him out.  Its crazy, he's changing so much every day, I bet he will be walking and running before we know it.

Race Track

In about three months I will have a one year old.  Hard to believe, isn't it?  I still feel like I'm a freshman in college sometimes, but time keeps on flying by.

Tristan is starting to be a lot more social, and he's starting to learn new things.  With a lot of coaching, he's sitting up on his own, with his back straight.  Man!  That was a long time coming.  We bought him a race track baby toy to help entice him to sit up and play, and so far it's working well.  He still prefers to roll rather than attempt crawling, but every baby has their own way of getting around.  We have gotten him to scoot forward once or twice, when he has something he desperately wants just out of reach.....like my computer or Nick's shoes.  He will also take a few steps with us.  Last night, we were just playing on the floor, and he pulled himself up with the bouncer, but promptly fell over, haha.  Nick's older brother Chris suggested we get him a little baby table so he could learn to pull himself up better, so we might check out the Kid to Kid store or DI and see what they've got.

But besides all that, he has learned to clap, and seems to do it appropriately.  He'll clap when we say "yeay!" or when he sees me coming at him with a jar of baby food.  He's also started saying "mama", and he says it all the time!  So maybe that's his word to mean everything, haha, but it's super cute.  Especially when he's sad and crying and reaching for me he goes "mamamamamama!"  And the funniest is that Suki has become his favorite playmate.  They both aren't the smartest, so it's hilarious to watch this happen day after day.  Suki will come and sit next to him, and he'll roll over and start patting her, giggling and screaming, until he finally gets a fistful of fur and yanks.  Suki runs off, sometimes making a screech, but returns moments later and it happens again.  She just adores him so much I guess she doesn't mind losing some fur....haha crazy kitty.  I'm just glad she's so sweet with him, I don't think I could have found a better cat, she never bites or hisses at him.  Although, I can't guarantee that it will always be that way, so I pull him away from her when I notice.

And that's about all for now about Tristan.  He's doing well, very happy, sleeping through the night and sometimes into the morning (can't complain there!).  He also is loving solids, bananas and sweet potatoes are still his favorite.  I need to find something he likes with less sugar!  Pears seem to work for now, but I really want him to eat peas and such.  Oh well, I'll keep working on it.  He also has discovered sippy cups, not very well, but we're working on that too.  He'll get it to his mouth and drink a bit, but then make a face and shove it away.  Silly baby.  Isn't it crazy how fast your little one grows up?

Food experiments

One of my favorite things to write about is food, why?  I dunno, probably because I envy everyone who can eat it.  Still, I love to cook, and I love to take pictures of what I cook especially since I have pretty dishes now to feed people with.

This is an experiment.  I call it.....um, chicken chili.....hahaha very original.  See, I remembered I had a slow cooker, thanks to my old roommie Sarah, and I thought if I cooked the chicken in spices and sauce, it would get super tender and make excellent quesadillas.  So I blended a can of tomatoes with tomato paste, onions and garlic, and a burrito spice pack.  Then I cut up a chicken breast and added it to the mix and let that slow cook for 3 hours.  When I went to take it out, it hadn't worked quite like I wanted, and I didn't know what to do with the sauce.  So I had another idea.  I shredded up the chicken pieces, and let them slow cook for another hour, and also added a can of butter beans. Then I sliced up tortillas, brushed them with oil, and baked them until they got crispy.  Then I topped them with cheese, and baked them again. The finished product ended up being a chili kind of thing atop cheesy tortilla chips.  Nick said it tasted amazing!  So, cudos to me.

This was nothing terribly special, just a breakfast I made for our house guests from Panama.  Bacon, fresh strawberries, with homemade whipped cream, orange juice, whipped eggs, and sour cream pancakes.  Oh my gosh, my house smelled incredible the whole day.  Sour cream pancakes are my favorite.  There wasn't a thing left on that table.

And tonight, we had Will and Emily join us again (I'm really liking these Sunday dinners).  I made home made mashed potatoes, which Nick sliced up for me.  We also had french bread and asparagas stir-fry veggies.  Now the main dish, the chicken, I got a little creative with.  Nick told me to use my imagination, so I went to town!  I had this thought, since my "chicken chili" turned out so great, how about something similar, in a white sauce?  I started with garlic and onions, chopped up and sauteed in butter.  Then I added basil, nutmeg, worschershire sauce and crushed red pepper.  Let that all reduce, and then added flour for thickener, sour cream and milk.  Once that was all mixed and thickening,  I added a handful of shredded mozzarella.  It smelled sooooo good!  I put it all in the slow cooker, while Emily chopped up the chicken for me.  When she was done, I seared the chicken in butter before adding it to my white sauce, and let that slow cook for two hours.  We shredded that chicken too, and it ended up looking like the chicken stuff you put on Hawaiian haystacks.  I decided that would be the topping for the mashed potatoes, and it actually turned out pretty good, it even was yummy blended.  Hehe, I'm so original.

Isn't it tragic someone like me likes to cook so much?  It's like asking a deaf person to write music and then listen to it.  Well, I guess I'm the Beethoven of the culinary world.

Something smells Fishy

I've decided, I'm not much of a fish person.  Probably because the thought of blending it repulses me, and the smell precooking it terrible, and they are slimy.  If there's one thing I can't stand, it's slime on my fingers.  *shudders*

But!  When my dad was visiting, he gave us two whole salmon fillets....and these things are huge.  We added them to the two he had already given us, and there we were with four giant salmon fillets and no idea how to cook them.  Still, we decided to be brave Sunday night, and invited Will and his fiance Emily to join us.  Nick did the cutting, thank goodness, they were just too fishy for me (badum ching!).

In order to maximize our chance of success, we cooked the two fillets in three different ways.  One we cut in half and covered each half with different spices to bake.  One was old bay spice, chopped garlic and butter.  The other was basil, garlic powder, whole onion rings and butter.  Those baked for about an hour while we battered up and fried the rest.  Nick cut little pieces for me to work with; I battered them in mayo/spicy mustard/egg goo, and then breaded them with dry potato flakes.  Then we deep fried them in veggie oil (very NOT healthy, but apparently oh so tasty).  One of the last things was baguette with cream cheese, mmmmm.

Nick had also been saying he wanted tartar sauce without the pickles, or little green things.  Will had gone to the store while we were cooking to pick up some last minute things, like dill, but after mixing the dill and mayo and worchershire sauce, garlic, onion and cayenne pepper, something was still missing.  The pickles.  So when Nick wasn't looking, I sneaked a dollop of relish in and stirred it up. Will  thought it was funny, especially when Nick said the tartar sauce was great.  Of course we told him, and he said he would get me for it later.  Still, dinner was a great success.

Then, when Nick went fishing with a couple friends visiting from Panama (more on their visit later!) he caught a brown trout.  It ended up soaking in milk in our fridge for two days.....eww.  Apparently that gets the slime off.  Well, Nick decided to fry it up in butter and garlic, but still wasn't satisfied with how it turned out.  So he cut all the meat off and asked me to help him bread and fry it up.  They ended up looking like little chicken tenders, and smelled pretty  good too.  He ate a bunch but saved most of them for his friends to try.

Long story short, our house has smelled like fish for a few days, haha.

Appointments

So far.....nothing.  Well, I guess I wasn't really expecting anything to come of all the tests, but then again, you always hope for something because then you have a definitive answer.  We're still off in the clouds somewhere.

So, first he had the xrays, which were totally normal.  Then on Thursday, he had an MRI.  That was exciting.  He couldn't have anything to eat past 6:30 in the morning, so it worked out that he woke up at 5:30, ate, and went back to sleep until we had to leave for Salt Lake at 11.  Thankfully, my sister Becky offered herself for company since Nick couldn't come, and I was soo glad to have her there!  When we were all checked in, we ended up waiting for an hour and a half just to get Tristan's IV started.  He did very well though, he wasn't terribly upset, we just kept walking around with him and distracting him from the fact that "food" wasn't feeding him.  And the IV went super well, he didn't even flinch!  Not sure if that is a bad thing......haha but really, they got it in the first try, he didn't even seem upset, and then half an hour later, they were ready to take him back.  He sat on my lap while they gave him the sedative, and he was out before they even finished the syringe....haha I think he was already exhausted (it was about 2:30 in the afternoon by this time).  Then Becky and I got something to drink and waited for him to be done.  When they brought him to recovery, he was waking up, so we had to get him back to sleep because they wanted him to sleep there for at least two hours.  Becky and I took turns holding him, and around 4:30 they said we could wake him up.  He was sooooo funny when he woke up.  He couldn't focus on anything,he was wobbly all over the place, and he couldn't stop talking!  Bababababa, mumumumummmm, aaaaaah! Dadadadataaaaaataaaa, ahhhhh! Seriously, the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life.

And the good thing is, that came back normal.  Hmmm, so no problems with his cranial nerves and no problems with his brainstem.  So on to the opthalmology appointment.....or I should say, the optometry appointment.....way to go schedulers.  We ended up waiting a little longer while they tried to squeeze us in with a real MD.  And!  Guess what?  Eye sight, completely normal.  Surprise surprise, like I said, I wasn't really expecting anything to come up.  They did dilate his eyes though, so he was a little silly the rest of the day because of that as well.  Poor kid, so many tests and nothing wrong.  Kinda frustrates me, because one doctor is like "bah! look, this is a problem, have him seen immediately!" then the other is like "pffft, he's fine".  Soooooooooo, one more appointment next week with audiology, and then we get to put all the tests together and go, "oh, really?  needed botox all along, eh?"

Anyhoo!  at least we all had a good laugh when he came out of being sedated right?  Even the other patients recovering and all the nurses.  more news about it all next week!  stay tuned!

Finally, a doctor who listens

You know how I used to complain about Tristan's physical therapist all the time?  That he wasn't listening to us? (Nice guy, but not very bright).  Well, I WAS RIGHT!

All this time, Nick and I have suspected something else was going on, something deeper than just a stiff muscle that caused Tristan to tilt his head, and be a little slower than most babies.  I used to always compare him to his little friend Isaac, wondering why a baby that was two months younger was leaps and bounds ahead of him.  I had been asking to have him seen by a specialist for months, but his pt always said he was fine, he was normal, blahdi-blahdie-blah.  I'm glad I kept pushing the issue.  Doctors need to listen to their patients better.  I guess having worked at Grandview, I was a little spoiled when it came to good doctors, it's hard to get out there and be a patient myself and see the frustration they deal with when having to be subject to egotistical physicians.

Tristan finally had his appointment at Primary Children's today.  After waiting for 3 months, well, 5 actually since that's when I started asking to have it.  And it was very productive I thought.  Still, a little unnerving.  See, we went in hoping to get an answer and treatment plan to help with his perpetual head tilt, which we attributed to his being unable to sit up and crawl, and do all sorts of other things.  We thought they would do a simple botox injection to loosen the tight muscle and give him time to strengthen the other one.  But, we were met with more "answers" than we had prepared for.

After a thorough examination by the NP and the MD......they were concerned about a couple things not necessarily pertaining to the already problematic torticollus, although we won't know till he has a bunch of tests.  First they noticed the head tilt, which is odd because they informed us he should have resolved that by now, something else is making him continue to do it, and also his curved/torqued back.  They noticed that his eyes were a little off, meaning they didn't track completely in sync.  They also noticed that he didn't seem to have any sense of where is located in space.  It's called proprioception.  He can't sit up without falling over a second later, but the most concerning part is that he doesn't try to save himself.  It's like he doesn't know he is falling.  So they were concerned maybe about a dysfunction or malformation of a cranial nerve, specifically IV, and also problems with his brainstem.  Wow, that's a lot to take in.

Now, these are all just maybe's.  No definitive diagnosis yet.  Maybe something's wrong, maybe nothings wrong.  But we need to have him tested at least.  To make sure there wasn't anything structurally wrong that could be causing his perpetuated head tilt, he had a couple x-rays today.  Thankfully they came out normal, and the little booger peed all over the table....haha, giggling the whole time.  I'm glad he was such a happy baby for his very long appointment.  But he has an MRI (sedated.... :( ...)  scheduled for Thursday, and an opthalmology appointment for Friday, and hopefully audiology next week.  We need to find out why he can't balance himself, why he doesn't try to stop himself from falling, and why he continually tilts his head and torques his body.

We're just super thankful that someone actually listened to our concerns today, and that they cared enough, and had enough expertise in the field to make conscious decions about his care.  Hoping that it's something that can be easily treated, but if not, at least we will be seeing doctors in probably the best pediatric hospital in the west.

Bobbed

Let's do some quick catch up pictures, and!  tell you all about my awesome new do.

Yesterday, I looked in the mirror and realized, my hair was a long blah.  Not fun, plus it took a handful of shampoo to wash and 15-30 minutes to blowdry.  And then it was a poofy mess anyways!  And Tristan loves to pull on it, chew on it, suck on it, you name it.  So, I decided it was time to go.  I asked Nick, and he was all for it, considering he did make that picture of me on Taaz.com with a bob cut.  Yeay!  Time for a haircut, my favorite!

I said just above my shoulders, or maybe a little shorter, with bangs.  And well, she went to the "a little shorter" side.  But, I love it!  So light, so fluffy, so awesome!  Do you realize what this means?  Less time getting ready, less time rinsing endless amounts of shampoo out, no more tangles!  And best of all, Tristan can't reach it, mwahahahaha.  Well, except when he was lying on the bed next to me, he rolled over and grabbed a handful.  It's because Nick lets him pull on his hair, no idea why.  Anyhoo, when I got done, I called Nick and told him it was gone.  Like, all gone, like no more ponytails gone.  And so he and Tristan waited in the window for me to come home, and when I came it the door, Nick was like, "ah!  It's gone!"  Then he started touching it, and running his fingers through it, like a deer in headlights, saying "you look so different, you don't look like my Sara."  Ok, maybe it was a little drastic......but eventually he was like, "no, I like it, it's very cute! It's just going to take me a bit to get used to it."  He's been ogling at it since, haha.  Well, change is good.  I'd take a picture for you, well, a better picture, but I've got a giant zit on my forehead, so the picture will have to wait.  I thought those went away after you "grew up".  Oh well.

In other news, Tristan has learned how to sit up in his bouncer, and he is so close to crawling!  He pooches his butt in the air, or will lay on his side and prop himself up, but he's just not quite there yet.  Pretty soon though I imagine.  He's also discovered how to click his tongue and make all sorts of new sounds.  His latest "mum-mum-mum-mum".   Hehe go baby!  He's also decided that he likes to sleep on his tummy, which of course freaks me out every time I go to check on him in the morning.
